Huxleys Purpose Psychoanalytic and Feminist Perspective for Writing A Brave New World - Free Essay Example
The book Brave New World was written as a futuristic tale by English author Aldous Huxley in the early 1930s. This story of a utopian society struggling with the nuances of existence shares significant parallels with the common issues experienced in Europe and America in the 1920s. This period of modernism in the world broke the traditional mold of the way society was for the past several hundred years. A stronger emphasis on socialism, consumerism, technology, drugs, and sex filled the era. Huxley, who experienced this change firsthand, could have written Brave New World as a form of social commentary to provide his own rendition of the way things were and the way things could eventually become. Americas cultural civil war. (1) could have been viewed by Huxley as the beginning of moral decay in a soon-to-be undesirable society. To support this hypothesis and provide a better understanding of Huxleys purpose, the comparing and contrasting of both the psychoanalytical theory and Feminist theory will take place. Psychoanalytic literary theory is the brainchild of psychologist Sigmund Freud and can be used to uncover critical connections between the author and their work. Freudian analysis states that our mental lives derive largely from biological drives (2), that all compulsions can be traced back to animalistic impulses and instincts which originate within us from different points in development including childhood and puberty. Its not coincidental that these compulsions can be seen clearly in Brave New World. Feminism literary theory, when looked at simplistically, examines the roles of women in literature from an equality standpoint. Are women treated differently than men? If so, how are they different and how can that relate to the author? Specifically, looking into the role of mothers within the story could prove to be extremely important to uncovering Huxleys true purpose. The excerpt from Brave New World that offers extreme insight to the psychoanalytic perspective is the infant nursery where babies undergo classical conditioning on a severely inhumane level. Readers are introduced to the thought process of being motherless through the existence of the childrens less than conventional rearing. The notion that children can be conditioned for the benefit of all is where we see the parallels with Freuds notion of animalistic impulses and instincts (2) stated above. The idea of the unconscious taking over when forced out to produce conditioned behavior is straight out of the Freudian handbook. These primal compulsions, brought about through the stated conditioning and oxygen restriction, are the main factors for control within Huxleys created society. A passage from the story reviews just how underplayed these actions are in this crafted world. The surrogate goes round slower; therefore passes through the lung at longer intervals; therefore gives the embr yo less oxygen. Nothing like oxygen-shortage for keeping an embryo below par (Huxley). Freudian tendencies in ample supply with this scene. Peering at the very same scene through a feminist lens offers a significantly different outlook for the conditioning rooms and the nurseries. The roll of the mother is effectively swapped out with nurses, often sterilized and of undisclosed genders, to carry out the conditioning. The nurses are played out as cold individuals who wear covering attire and carry out the horrific tasks without a single shutter in their step. This behavior is undoubtedly the result of going through anti-nurturing conditioning of their very own during their developmental stages. A perfect example of this conditioning taking place, along with the nurses actions, can be viewed in the passage from the novel below: The Head Nurse, who was standing by a switchboard at the other end of the room, pressed down a little lever. There was a violent explosion. Shriller and ever shriller, a siren shrieked. Alarm bells maddeningly sounded. The children started, screamed; their faces were distorted with terror. And now they Director shouted (for the noise was deafening), now we pro proceed to rub in the lesson with a mild electric shock. (Huxley) As this chapter continues it becomes more and more evident that this lack of mothering behavior is a necessity to carry out this conditioning. Any mothering tendencies displayed by the nurses would result in less than effective results. The production of these conditioned perfect citizens was directly impacted by this process. Even uttering the M-word (mother) was considered remarkably taboo in this new world of Huxleys. Peering through these two lenses at A Brave New World brings to light significant differences in what they reveal about the story when relating it to Huxleys real modern world in the 1920s. Each theory focuses on what the other cant. Psychoanalysis tends to focus on what the people are receiving while feminism offers what they are not. When only viewing Huxleys vision through one perspective you are undoubtedly missing out on the other half of the story. When applied together, readers are given the entire picture to consider. Sadly, neither the real world nor his fictitious society seem to have a bright future. Huxley is looking at the real world as if hes viewing them in his book. Real life people appear to be becoming conditioned through the cultural civil war (1) brought about by the changes of the 1920s. Huxleys apparent dislike for Americanism only could have intensified as more and more problems seemed to arise. The 1920s in American brought about prohibition, the Ku Klux Clan, womens roles, and race issues. If everything were to have stayed the same, if these Americanized changes would have never happened, then perhaps society would have been more conforming. Digging deeper into Huxleys own upbringing, we are reintroduced to the role of the mother. Huxley lost his mother when he was very young. He wasnt able to have that mothering upbringing to supply him with a well-rounded rearing during his developmental stages. Perhaps this is why the act of mothering is taboo in his written world. He witnessed firsthand what it feels like to not have a mother. Therefore, he must oppose this Americanized challenge to the roles of women. They need to be home to properly raise the children. If not, then just read in his book to find out what can happen. Aldus Huxley was a man viewing the world he knew change before him. One can only hypothesize how much of Brave New World came about from fear or pure observation. The themes of change brought about in the 1920s draws obvious parallels to his crafted world. The Roaring 20s were a time where the younger generation rebelled against traditional taboos while their elders engaged in an orgy of speculation (4). Huxleys social commentary on this changing time, when assisted with psychoanalysis and feminism lenses, offers a unique view into his own outlook on the world of tomorrow.

She tried to bring this point across in a powerful, emotional way by adding her experiences into the story in order to convey her points in a realistic fashion. In order to try and solve her depression and repeated nervous breakdowns, Gilman sought out treatment from Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, the best specialist in the country. Mitchell gave Gilman the ââ¬Å"rest cureâ⬠, which was a ââ¬Å"cureâ⬠that isolated one from friends and family. The Evolution Of The World Essays (535 words) - Pseudoscience
The evolution of the world The Greek geographers of the later Roman period developed systematic calculations for the mapping and shaping of the earth. However, what would come to replace these systematic calculations? Why were the ideologies of a flat earth accepted and why were those of a spherical earth ridiculed? The answer to this question is very simple and can be answered by one clear and concise word: Religion. "Thus saith the Lord God; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her." (Ezekiel 5:5) This verse from the of book Ezekiel simply states that the city of Jerusalem should be in the center of all maps created. This eliminated the need for any latitude or longitude. Before hand, there had been more than six hundred maps created, not one having this holy city as the center. There was nothing new about putting "the most sacred place at the center" says Boorstin. The Hindus placed Mount Meru, a mythological 70,000 foot high mountain at the center of their map. In the Muslim faith, the Ka'bah in Mecca was the highest point on earth and the polestar showed the city of Mecca to be opposite the center of the sky. As one can clearly see, many maps, had different centers. Each map had a different center, each based on a different religion. Many years before the birth of Jesus Christ, the Greeks theorized that the earth was a globe. But after that, there was a period in history called "The Great Interruption." This period was categorized by a complete silence where people in general, forgot about the issue of whether the earth was flat or whether it was a globe. Another reason that brought the theories of a globular world to rest was because the priests told the general public that the earth was flat. Priests such as St. Augustine and others invented the Antipode theory, which stated that a world shaped like a globe is impossible because objects would be hanging downwards and growing backwards. Once again, religion played a major part in this argument that would rage on for many years to come. To conclude, much like the theories of the priests in the first 400 years after the birth of Jesus Christ, who said that Jerusalem was the center of a flat earth, one might be able to relate this period in time to a much more recent and modern one. Prior to the French Revolution in 1789, France was ruled by an absolute divine right monarchy. The institution that had the most power at the time was the Catholic church. No one in France would ever dare question the word of the Church. Everything the Church said had to be true and that was that. This is further reinforced by the church's persecution of Copernicus who later again theorized that the earth was not the center of the solar system. This illustrates that 1000 years later, religion remained the backbone of society, and to a lesser extent, the same still holds true today in certain societies.

Tok History Essays
Tok History Essays Tok History Paper Tok History Paper Its purpose is to absorb the main idea of what happened in the past and how we will adjust or change to such events. In order for this to take place, we must then just accept certain facts, or myths, that we really arent sure of because we wont ever be completely assured of this information, but it still ends up being part of the past. This leads to the second fragment of the quote, that history is hope. Truth is, without a doubt, we wont ever be able to go back in time and relive certain events that wed like to see or to prove or disprove. For the time being, though, its imperative that we must have faith that all of the history that were being exposed to is the majority of the truth. We have let historians screen what they believe to be relevant and meaningful and therefore it is only fair that we accept such history and hope that it is true because we personally wont ever presence the actual occurrence of events that took place in the past. However, there is indeed a significant amount of history that is reality that in fact happened. Whether we were there when it happened, we have been told from extremely reliable sources or we are let known from undeniable evidence, there does exist history that is completely true. We may not know the background to certain events and the true causes or motivations, but we can certainly see the outskirts and the effects of such incidents and that is the truth. If we take for example the Bible and its teachings, this is surely a clichi d example, but the effect that it has had in my life, proves the validity of the quote that was previously mentioned. Revisionists will always question events that are depicted in the Bible for their supernatural nature whether it is the creation of humanity as a result from Adam and Eve or the fact that Jesus rose again three days later after he was crucified. Heck, its difficult for me to truly believe these concepts even if I understand them. This myth part ends up being the counterargument in itself because history is supposed to be the truth of what happened. A myth ultimately has no evidence to support its claims. However, I must admit that all these myths that my Catholic religion has nurtured to me trust in, and even more so because of the fact that I committed to my religion after First Communion, confirmed myself to being a Catholic only a few years ago and still go to church every Sunday, I believe in them. I hope that theyre mostly truths because even though they have been disproven as of late, I still choose to have faith in God because Ive grown to pray to him and venerate him all my life and he is my inspiration in times of despair. Now, the overall implication of the initial quote in the importance of knowing history is quite simple. The quote encompasses what history truly is made of and how valuable history is. History allows us to consider the perceptions, emotions and reasons that people had when writing the past and then make connections of this accepted past with the present and the future in order to see its true relevance and significance. Moreover, asking questions about the past allows us to prepare and think about how to react in the present and for the future. In a life with no history, humans would discover the same, new things everyday and society would never advance. Knowledge for development would not be acquired. What is good and what is evil? What is right and what is wrong? Such simple questions are the basis of discussion in terms of the Area of Knowledge (AOK) called Ethics. However, if we were to define ethics, we should consider the quote, Ethics is part myth, part hope and party reality. If we take for example the role of ethics in my life, although it is pretty present, it surges in various ways and maybe not so apparent at first. For example, the relationship I share with my mom. I truly love her and care for her greatly, however, I must admit that I constantly lie to her to a certain extent. For instance, when I go out in weekends, she restricts me in such a way that I feel I cant really enjoy myself and spend a nice time. So in response, I tell her part of the truth. I let her know where Ill be at first, but not were I plan to go or the people that will be with me. Now, the myth is that its unethical and wrong to lie to your mom. However, what if it turns out to be better for the both of us. I ultimately feel independent and enjoy my days off, while she doesnt have to bear with the worry or the fear that something bad might happen to me. Does this win-win effect end up being morally wrong? Furthermore, ethics is hope because I believe that despite my untruths, and the fact that the myth says that lying is an awful vice, it might actually be a virtue to keep my mom from carrying the burden of a volatile son and instead hope that I am doing a good deed by letting her believe that I do everything as she says and under her watch. The reality of ethics, however, is that hiding the truth will always be incorrect and morally wrong and especially when its directed towards your own mom. Nonetheless, through this quote and this example, were able to see that ethics plays a major role in the immediate consequences that are present in everyday life especially as we gain more knowledge of them and how we decided to apply them. In conclusion, I believe that history and ethics play a significant role in the way we attain knowledge and they are the main basis of who we are as a whole and who we will become in response to grasping this new knowledge. They are, however, part myths, part hope and part reality, but that doesnt change the fact that theyre crucial to the expansion and employment of our knowledge. Word Count: 1600 Bibliography 1. Church to Connect Essay Example for Free
Church to Connect Essay ââ¬Å"Our future is not to be found in our preservation but in our investmentâ⬠(19). ââ¬Å"The best way to predict the future is to create itâ⬠(20). ââ¬Å"Fewer people are attending church because of the diminishing influence of Christ on the church itself. â⬠ââ¬Å"We equated being a good citizen with being a good Christian. We lived without persecution and soon found ourselves without conviction. We didnââ¬â¢t lose America; we gave her away! In our panic and powerlessness we turned to political means to seek to regain what we once had through spiritual awakening . Yet as a moral majority we could not accomplish what God could through Gideonââ¬â¢s fewâ⬠(28). ââ¬Å"Once we were called Christians by an unbelieving world and now we call ourselves Christians and the world calls us hypocrites. Is it possible that it wasnââ¬â¢t the nation that was becoming dangerously secular but the church? We were neither relevant nor transcendent. We have become, in the worst of ways, religious. We are the founders of the secular nationâ⬠(29). ââ¬Å"The church became a refuge from the world rather than a force in the world. Predictability and stability became dominant themesâ⬠¦. The gospel shifted from a church on a mission to a church that supported missionsâ⬠(30). ââ¬Å"How could we ever think that the Christian faith would be safe when its central metaphor is an instrument of death? It is not a coincidence that baptism is a water grave depicting death and resurrection. It is no less significant that the ongoing ordinance of the Lordââ¬â¢s Supper is a reminder of sacrifice. How did we ever develop a safe theology from such a dangerous faith? â⬠(33) ââ¬Å"Institutions preserve culture while movements create cultureâ⬠(34). ââ¬Å"For years the bulk of American Christians who were committed to missions could only participate through giving and praying. Today, the call to crosscultural ministry doesnââ¬â¢t even require going; it just requires staying with a purposeâ⬠(45). ââ¬Å"Where once the pagan lived in the country and the danger of the city was to be Christianized; now Christians tend to live away from the cities and view the urban dweller as the true paganâ⬠(46). ââ¬Å"Gideon was focused on mass; God was focused on momentumâ⬠(69). ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s hard to believe that a movement born of visionaries and dreamers would become dominantly known for its traditions and ritualsâ⬠(138). ââ¬Å"Just because a person cannot read doesnââ¬â¢t mean she lacks the capacity to learn. Oneââ¬â¢s present condition is not an indication of potential, but of developmentâ⬠(211). III. SALIENT POINTS/ANALYSIS 1. The Need for the Church to Connect with this Generation The author speaks about how in the past 40 years communities have changed dramatically yet many local churches have stayed the same. This explains the irrelevancy and bankruptcy of the church in regards to being salt and light and functioning as agents of change for culture. Even the way the gospel is communicated has to be changed if we are going to reach this present generation. One of the dramatic changes in our environment is the shift from words to images. To do church in a way that is entirely textdriven is the kiss of death. People donââ¬â¢t read, they simply observe. Beyond the emergence of a postliterate society, we have a culture raised on entertainment (17). As McManus states, ââ¬Å"While not many churches perform their services in Latin today, our language, style, music, and methods are pretty much Latin to the unchurched populationâ⬠(81).

The Unification of Greece :: Ancient History, Bronze Age, Greek
During the Bronze Age, the Minoan civilization; situated on the cultural bridge Island of Crete, greatly influenced the Aegean Islands as well as the Greece mainland (75). Though they were not Greeks, the Minoans kept detail records in a form of Greek. These peoples were ruled by a King who was supported by a bureaucracy and centered on a palace (75). This form of organization was typical of many early civilizations but changed tremendously after this age (75). After the Minoans, the Mycenaeans arose and ruled in a similar fashion to the Minoans. The Mycenaeans; though also non-Greek, settled in the Greek mainland and was ruled by a King who held a royal domain, was given the ability to appoint officials, and to command servants among other responsibilities (77). After the fall of the Mycenaean empire, many Greek peoples spread eastward, ended trade with the old civilizations, and internally throughout parts of Greece (78). This period led Greek peoples to move into smaller communit ies with little communication between them (78). The initial organization of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations were as close to unification as Greek history allowed until the Macedonians arrived. However, these successful civilizations were not Greek but situated themselves on what became Greece and merely demonstrated a slight similarity in language. After the fall of the Mycenaean civilization, Greeks entered though disorganized and independent. The appearance of the polis united Greek-speaking people though its initial use was not for such. The Greek poleis was a community of relatives who worshipped gods in ceremonies and formed republics dominated by the nobility through its councils of nobles and eventually distinguished monarchy (80-81). These poleis allowed Greekââ¬â¢s social life to grow and expand their territories tremendously (81-82). This expansion provided Greeks with a cultural identity and gave men outside the nobility an opportunity to become wealthy (82). This new class, however, also led to conflict and tyranny arose (82). The tyrants contributed most in that they eliminated the presence of the aristocracy leaving each citizen to prove their worth by their service of the polis (84). Throughout this period, tyrants ruled their individual city-states, and allied themselves with other allies to prevent war (84). After the end of the dark ages, Polytheism arose as a central religion connecting Greek peoples (85). During this age, the polis was still apparent though differed tremendously between different states (87). Sparta and Athens, though powerful and influential Greek states were among these poleis and though they were perhaps, the most likely of the states to unite Greece both were unfit.
